Compounding
When asked what I do and I say compounding the next thing I usually see is a puzzled look on the person’s face. This is not surprising since compounding is so new. The funny thing about saying this is that it is not new at all. Before medications were manufactured, every medication was compounded.
Compounding pharmacy is the long-standing process of mixing drugs by a pharmacist to fit the unique needs of a patient. For example, a patient allergic to the dyes used in a pill can obtain a doctor’s prescription for the necessary medicine to be compounded without the offending dye.
There are many dosage forms that can be compounded including:
- Capsules
- Transdermal Gels
- Ointments
- Suppositories-vaginal and Rectal
- Topical creams
- Oral disintegrating tablets
- Sublingual Tablets
